Saying Goodbye to 2014’s Slang

Waiting for bae. How about naw. YASSSSSS.

2015 may be squarely in the door, but there’s no denying that a lot of 2014’s Sunday dinner is still hanging around. This includes the semi revival of chokers and a world stuck on trivia crack, as well as some pretty serious slang we’re still hearing, whether we want to or not.

 Here’s a walk down (very recent) memory lane with a look at just some of 2014’s trendy vernacular– the kind of thing that it might be time to consider taking out of your daily snapchats.

‘On Fleek’

Definition: ‘On point’

Example: Your eyebrows are on fleek.

 ‘YASSSSS’ 

Definition: An enthusiastic yes, generally involving (but by no means limited to) a group of people and an action.

Example: “Want to go out for tacos?” “YASSSSSSS!”

Yeet’ 

Definition: Although debatable, generally used to express gargantuan levels of excitement, especially during a sporting event.

Example: When Laquisha made a slam dunk, the whole team shouted, “Ahhh Yeet!”

‘How About Naw’

Definition: No.

Example: While watching the Nick Jonas music video Sarah said, “uhhh… how about naw.”

‘Bae’ 

Definition: For our purposes, it means something like baby or loved one.

Example: “Waiting for the bae with a bucket of ice cream and pretty little liars.” or “Bae, I love u more than rainbows and unicorns 5 ever xoxo!”

‘Goals’

Definition: Means what you’re aiming for. Sometimes is used for more a satirical commentary.

Example: Susie posts a photo of her cute puppy Samson, and then captions it ‘goals‘. Could be ironic or not. Up to interpretation.

‘Dat’

Definition: That.

Example: Susie snapchats a seflie to her best friend Jojo, she captions it “I got dat swag.” Jojo replies, “how about naw.”

‘The Struggle’

Definition: A noun. A state of being. Can be lengthened to ‘the struggle bus’ or ‘struggler’.

Example: “Man, the struggle,” said Jojo to Susie after the history test. They nodded in mutual agreement.

 

 

So there you have it, a look back at the swaggin’ words we’ve been rocking the socks off of throughout 2014. So, what slang have you been sporting lately? Here’s a few new bits of trendy jargon that I’ve dug up after extensive questioning of the (generally far cooler) people around me and some serious exploration into the hippest corners of the internet….
