Movie Reviews by Sofia Duarte: X

X (2022)

Dir. Ty West

Mia Goth, Scott Mescudi, Jenna Ortega, Brittany Snow

1970s Texas was home to more than just chainsaw murders. In Ty West’s X, six amateur adult filmmakers set out to make the first “good dirty movie”. They stay in a rural boarding house owned by two old people who quickly catch onto what they are doing there, and don’t like the looks of it. X has the classic true horror traits that make this the best horror film of 2022. It has stomach-wrenching gore comparable to Saw (2002) and Hereditary (2019). The story is quick-paced and fun, unnerving and scandalous, and a great watch for any and all horror fans.

As a lover of 70’s pop culture, this movie hit the sweet spot! From original cars, electronics, and fashion, I was happy to see a new movie with good vintage and antiques true to the time period. Mia Goth’s boho tube tops and overalls channeled Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused (1993), and Alan Pakula’s Klute (1971), so of course, I was obsessed! The soundtrack was another favorite, from Loretta Lynn to Jerry Reed, this movie rekindled my love for old western tunes and old western horror!
