The Worst Person in the World (2021)
Dir. Joachim Trier
Renate Reinsve, Anders Danielsen Lie, Herbert Nordrum
Joachim Trier’s The Worst Person in the World, chronicles the life of Julie, a young woman navigating relationships, careers, and death in modern day Oslo. This harrowing portrait of the adventure into adulthood is a masterpiece of cinematography, from its wide shots of suburban Norway, to its intimate captivation of Renate Reinsve’s (Julie) acting abilities. The mood this film encapsulates reminds me of films portraying intimate life such as Annie Hall (1977) and Marriage Story (2019). This film is utterly raw and personal, beautiful and distressed, a must-watch for anyone navigating the ups and downs of life. Joachim Trier and Renate Reinsve guide the future of Norwegian cinema, and I can’t wait to see what comes from them next.
