Social Media Takeover

A Social Dilemma Review

The Social Dilemma

The Social Dilemma

Amanda Macias Schreiber, Staff Writer

Through this documentary, the public is shown the behind the scenes workings of major social media platforms as the curtain is lifted by former employees and presidents. Starting from the beginning, on how these platforms were formed, and how each mechanism was intended, the journey to what it has become now, as these creations got away from their programmers is put on display. Taking into account the real-world effects of these platforms, such as increased teen suicides, radical conspiracists taking to the streets, and genocides being committed against groups of people, the programmers and creators of these platforms discuss how it was through their work that radical groups of people have been able to mobilize and spread their hate. The good effects were displayed as well though, through the formation of social movements through social media, such as #BlackLivesMatter, and teens standing up against gun violence, real change has happened because of social media. It is a two-sided coin as the former employees of these social media platforms discussed. A reenactment of a family experiencing the harsh effects of social media, cyberbullying, and conspiracists were shown throughout the documentary, and while some of the scenes were a little awkward, it did provide examples of how people are affected based on the interviewees’ observations.  Since it has been acknowledged by all that social media is not going away, the documentary ends with a message of hope as they share real ways that we can all make this better, not just the programmers and designers of these platforms, but us users as well.
