in Beyond Our Walls/News by

Greta Thunberg, full name Greta Tintin Eleonora Ernman Thunberg, is a young political climate change activist. Thunberg has become well known for her speeches on climate and environmental activism, as well as leading protests and being a straightforward speaker. Many also know her, both positively and negatively, due to the fact that she has Aspeger’s Syndrome, OCD, and selective mutism, although Thunberg herself does not view her Asperger’s as a drawback or illness, instead describing it as a “superpower”.

Greta Thunberg was born on January 3, 2003 in Stockholm, Sweden. She has a passion for climate change and conservation, and managed to convince her parents to reduce their carbon footprint in several ways, such as no longer traveling by air or consuming meat.

Though Thunberg became aware of climate change when she was 8, the first time she truly stepped into the world of politics was at age 15, when she spent her days outside the Swedish parliament in protest, calling for stronger action against climate change. This led to her, along  with her classmates, to form a fully-fledged climate strike named Fridays for Future. When Thunberg addressed the 2018 United Nations Climate Change Conference, student strikes began to take place around the world. In 2019, she was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, which is awarded to those who have done tremendous amounts of work in the formation and spreading of peace.

Described as a “next-generation leader” by Time magazine, her fame has turned her into someone loved by many and hated by others. Thunberg has been openly endorsed by many, including United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, who admitted that “My generation has failed to respond properly to the dramatic challenge of climate change. This is deeply felt by young people. No wonder they are angry.” However, Thunberg has been met with opposition by many, including President Donald Trump, who tweeted (in response to Thunberg being named Person of the Year for 2019 by Time): “So ridiculous. Greta must work on her Anger Management problem, then go to a good old fashioned movie with a friend! Chill Greta, Chill!“.

An impassioned climate activist and determined speaker, Greta Thunberg is not just a next-generation leader, but someone who has and will drastically change the world for the better. She speaks bluntly and straightforward, understanding the issue of climate change and the need for it to be addressed urgently. With a bright mind and a bold opinion, Thunberg is sure to be a strong and impactful figure for years to come.
