in Entertainment/Showcase by

If you are looking for something to do with friends over spring break, then try checking out South by Southwest (SXSW), a city-wide festival for art, music, movies, and more. Even if you don’t have a badge for SXSW, there are many ways for you to still participate and make use of this week long event. The first main way is to buy individual tickets to the specific artist you want to see. However, you can also attend free shows as long as you get there before the event is too full. Here are some free artist/bands that will be performing this SXSW:

At the Spider House Cafe, on March 17th, is an all ages show featuring Guantanamo Baywatch, Part Time, and No Parents. The event starts at 11:00 P.M. and ends at 2:00 A.M. Guantanamo Baywatch is an Indie Rock band with a lively and freewheeling sound from Portland Oregon. Part Time is an Alternative band that started in Austin with a lo-fi pop sound that’s easy to move along to. No Parents is a Pop Punk band with a very fast, energetic tone that is bound to get you up and dancing along. Come down to 2906 & 2908 Fruth Street Austin for a show full of rock and dancing.

At Cherrywood Coffee House, on March 15th, is an all ages show from 12:00 P.M. to 2:30 P.M. called “The Take Off Tour with Marah in the Mainsail & Good Morning Bedlam”.  Marah in the Mainsail is a rock band with folk and country sounds. Their music ranges from upbeat and fast, to calm and relaxing. Good Morning Bedlam is a contemporary folk band with soft sounds and unique vocals and includes the banjo. Their style is a twist of what would be considered folk music.  You must RSVP prior to the event on the SXSW website to attend.

Martin.Triathalon is a lo-fi R&B and indie band from L.A. that has a smooth peaceful sound that’s easy to listen and move along to. Innerwave is indie Rock band from L.A. with hints of electronic. Their music gives a smooth but upbeat feeling that is easy to dance and sing along to.  L. Martin is an indie pop artist from Wisconsin with a unique style and mix of pop and alternative music.

Lucy Stagg is a sophomore who has a passion for both music and journalism. In her free time, you can catch Lucy in the halls with her headphones in her ears and her fingers clicking the keys on her laptop writing about the things she is passionate about. On the weekends you can either find her at concerts with friends or going to see a movie with her mom at the Alamo Drafthouse. Lucy’s experience in journalism began last year when she took photojournalism and is excited to continue being a part of the #JFam by joining the Polaris Press. In the future you can picture Lucy “in a boat on a river, with tangerine trees and marmalade skies...” as well as travelling the world and continuing her passion for music by successfully teaching herself how to play guitar but for now Lucy is happy to continue writing for APP while the staff sings “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” every time they see her.
