Victory rewarded the runners, all covered in ant bites, as the junior varsity team won the title of district champions. Varsity also brought home a win as they qualified for Regional Championships. Placed as district runner-ups, varsity came in after Austin High School and before LBJ.
“Every girl fought all the way until the end and that’s all you can ask,” Mr. Andrew Langford, cross country coach said. “I’m really proud of them and excited to be district runner up, and to go to regionals to see what we can do.”
After notoriously-strong runners graduated, the pressure to perform well at the district meet weighed heavy on current athletes.
“We were all nervous,” Olivia Griesmer (10) said. “We’ve been training hard all season to get our goal of winning district. We did a great race a couple of weekends ago, and it’s all come down to district.”
Maddy Schell (11) had a rough season of many injuries, which included a broken toe, tendinitis in the knee, and a previously sprained ankle.
“This meet will actually be the first time that I competed in a 5K this season, so I’m slightly nervous about that,” Schell said. “Today will be kind of like redemption, even though I don’t expect to do that well, but we’ll see how it goes.”
